Diwali Celebration Essay in English
Diwali 2016 will be celebrated from 30th October to 4th November 2016.Diwali is the festive celebration of five days.Diwali usually begins in Ashwin and ends in Kartike. So I am here to provide you the significance of each day of Diwali and how it is celebrated.
First Day- Dhanteras
Dhanteras is the very first day of Diwali. Dhanteras is made up two words- “Dhan” which means “wealth” and “teras” which means “thirteen”. It is usually celebrated on the 13th day of Poornima or 13th lunar day of Krishna Paksha in the month of Ashwin. Dhanteras marks the celebration of Goddess Lakhshmi, the Goddess of Wealth. On this day. People buy new utensils, idols of Ganesh and Lakshmi. People also buy sold or silver to impress Goddess Lakshmi.

Second Day- Chhoti Diwali
The second day of Diwali is called as Chhoti Diwali or Narak Chaturdashi.
It is celebrated on 14th day of Poornima after Dhanteras. It is a belief that Lord Krishna has killed the demon Naraksur on this day and has made us free from the fear. On this day, people clean and lighten their house and office premises with the candles,diyas and latterns.Some children also burn crackers on this day.Happy Choti Diwali 2016 or Say Happy Chhoti Diwali 2016
Third Day- Diwali
This is the most important day among these five days. The third day is known as Diwali or LakshmiPujan. The new moon arrives on this day.It is celebrated in the dark fortnight of Ashwin. On this day people clean their house and decorate the place of worship with flowers and rangolis. In the evening, the Lakshmi puja is done in the presence of all the family members and then the crackers are burnt. Also the sweets and gifts are exchanged among friends and relatives and they wish each other.

Fourth Day- Govardhan Puja
The first day of bright fortnight Kartik is known as Govardhan Puja/ Balipratipada/ Padiwa/Varshapratipada. This day is celebrated because on this day Lord Krishna had lifted the Govardhan Parvat to protect the Gokul’s people from Indra’s wrath. Also the King Vikramaditya was crowned on this day. On this people make some structure from the cowdung and worship it.
Fifth Day- Bhaidooj
The final day of Diwali is known as Bhaidooj/ Bhaiyadooj. This day marks the love of brothers and sisters.On this day sisters put the Red tilak on her brother’s forehead and give sweets to eat. Brothers give money and gifts to the sisters in the return.
